Focus On: Watford Joggers
Who are Watford Joggers? A friendly club catering for runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities, from marathon runners to fair weather walkers. We have a very wide age range from early 20s to those in their 80s and have an equal male/female split with a membership of close to 150.
Where and when? Three times a week: Sundays at 9.15am, Cassiobury Park; Wednesdays at 7.15pm, West Herts Sports Club; Fridays at 7pm, Speed training various locations depending on season. Wednesdays attract a larger number of people, with many stopping for a drink after their run.
How do sessions work? We split into four or so groups and run, walk or jog various distances and speeds. On Wednesdays we have a beginners group. On Sundays and Wednesdays (during summer months) our two meeting points give us access to the canal and an extensive network of footpaths leading to Sarratt, Chipperfield, Rickmansworth etc. On Wednesday evenings during the winter months, we set routes around Abbots Langley, Bushey, Croxley and the Dome. These vary between 7 and 8 miles but some groups take shorter routes based on them. We always make sure that everyone has someone to run with.
Races? Although we are not principally a competitive club, many members enjoy participating in local races and we have a cross country team in a local Sunday League.
The social side of things? There is a very active social side to the club, with at least one event a month organised. Events include meals, theatre trips, concerts and pub runs. We also try and get at least one trip abroad each year, for a long weekend incorporating a race somewhere.

HRT (Harri's Running Team)
Who is Harri? I am a Marlow based personal trainer and Pilates instructor and a leader in running fitness. I am passionate about helping women keep fit whilst ageing successfully and lead running groups for women of all abilities and ages. I didn't start running until my mid-forties when I became hooked on the health benefits and joy of the sport. I have since run many half-marathons and marathons and intend to continue to do so until I drop.
Why start a running group? I started this group so that all women could learn to run, and continue running, in a friendly and non-intimidating environment. Whether you are 50plus or younger, this group is for you.
Don't just take Harri's word for it - “I am one of a group of age 50+ ladies who Harriet suggested try out running for beginners on a Saturday morning and just start off by sharing her enjoyment of running. She recommended that we chat all the time to help breathing and enjoy the route which has now escalated to 5 miles in an hour from a mile at the start. As a naturally positive person, Harriet would also be a brilliant personal trainer for anyone who would like to take up running." - Jilli Williams, Marlow
Where and when? The group meets in Marlow's Riley Park (behind Sainsbury's car-park). Sessions are on Saturday mornings at 9.30am for a group run, Thursday evenings at 6pm for an early evening group run and Tuesday mornings at 9.30am is a session for complete beginners
Last word? Whatever your fitness goal, whether it's taking those first tentative steps towards a healthier lifestyle, losing weight, or learning to run and train for your first race, I'm here to help.
