Panda Bear Challenge Medal

Panda Bear Challenge makes a big impression

This sold out event was a ‘furry’ good season opener.

A small and friendly field achieved their goals at the Panda Bear Challenge (Tuesday 1 February), getting the new month off to a positive start. The aid station stocked more than the bare necessities...

Race fuelling is an important issue especially if running a marathon or ultra and everyone’s needs were catered for at this inclusive event that saw people complete multiple laps in 6 hours. A slick operation from Big Bear Events and their first race of the year it had the venue, the weather and the participants – all the ingredients for a successful day and a memorable experience.

It was held at Ryton Pools Country Park near Coventry on a 5K (3.3 miles to be exact!) out and back loop consisting of paths and a small section of single track. Definitely runnable and relatively flat too: this is always welcome especially near the end when fatigue sets in and the legs start stiffening up. Plenty of route markings and marshals ensured no-one strayed off-course.

The aid station deserves a mention with its range of snacks that satisfied every dietary requirement, keeping the tanks topped up until the finish.

Big Bear races are known for their relaxed, friendly atmosphere and this was no exception with runners offering encouragement to each other as they chipped away at the laps. Some were targeting a half marathon, others a marathon or an ultra and they were joined by Rhino Boy Chris Green, running in support of his favourite (and endangered) animal.

Big Bear Events have partnered with Trees for Tees and, as part of their sustainable approach, gave people the option to plant a tree instead of receiving a medal, drink and a flapjack.

Their next race is the Big Bear Challenge on Tuesday 8 February at Daventry Country Park. Visit the website for more details.
