Saltire Trail Races

East Lothian's Flagship Trail Race Returns

June's Saltire Trail Races offer a fantastic family day out, start to finish...

Does the village of Athelstaneford mean anything to you? Some of the egg-heads among us may be aware that this is the birthplace of the Saltire, Scotland's national flag. And it is here that this summer's Saltire Trail Races will take place.

Scheduled for 4 June, there are three race options - 10K trail race, 5K and a 2K fun race for kids of all ages. All races are being held on the beautiful Kilduff Estate featuring a mix of trail, tarmac and field boundary and there are no road crossings to contend with.

The event is organised to race funds for Athelstaneford Primary School and after the races, those taking part as well as their family and friends can enjoy a BBQ, drinks, cakes, games and lots more at the Athelstaneford Village Summer Fair.

Speaking ahead of this year's race organisers commented: "It’s great to see so many of last years runners (including some previous winners!) coming back this year to have another go.

"Every race in 2022 set a new course record so check out the times to beat this year! Although there were no female overall winners, it was great to see so many girls and ladies taking part, with 60 of the 130 participants being female. Almost a 50/50 split. Fantastic!

"Between the races and the Athelstaneford Summer Fair, we managed to raise over £3000 for the village school and we hope to do as well this year."

As well as a beautiful location and post-race fun this event promises finisher's medals for all, trophies for male and female winners and £100 cash for male and female winners of the 5 & 10K races!

Posting on Facebook after last year's event, Ian Burdett said: "After the Saltire 10K race, the very hungry runner ate 1 chocolate brownie, 1 chocolate muffin, 1 slice of coffee and walnut cake, 2 slices of chocolate cake and drank 1 can of full fat Irn Bru. After that he felt a bit sick and went home to lie on the sofa."

Sounds perfect to us...
