Royal Estate invites a thousand to Run Sandringham...
More than 1,100 loyal footmen and footwomen reported for duty at Run Sandringham 2023 on Sunday 18 June 2023 – held in the 20,000 acre Royal Sandringham Estate, the private winter country retreat for all British monarchs since 1862, situated in the heart of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Good Running Events promoted this third edition of Run Sandringham with a multi-terrain choice of Half Marathon, 5K, or the untimed Community Mile to suit all ages and abilities.
The most popular event was the Run Sandringham Half Marathon, with 927 finishers in just under four hours. The complex, single-lap course creates quite a squiggle on a Strava map but there is no time to get bored with the many twists and turns as every aspect of the impressive parkland is explored.
Nathan Brown, of Newmarket Joggers, was the first man home in 1:16:21, with a comfortable lead over Sam Matchette (Cambridge Triathlon Club, 1:19:02) and Johnny Raspin (City of Norwich AC, 1:21:38).
Rebecca Flynn (unattached, 1:36:20) dominated the women's race ahead of W40 Gemma Barnes (1:40:05) and Katy Dickinson (Norwich RR, 1:40:12) – although the order of the runners-up was reversed on gun times after Barnes had apparently taken a minute to cross the start line.
The Run Sandringham 5K opened the programme at 9:00am on a single-loop course that enjoyed the same stretch in front of Sandringham Castle. Despite the undulating course, the first three men were below 20 minutes. Tadas Kalkauskas (Boston Triathlon Club, 18:51) raced clear of Ryston Runners James Ord (M40, 19:45) and Anthony Cassels (19:54).
Emma Wood (Ryston Runners, 21:09) was the fastest in the women's race, followed by Rosie Eales (Great Yarmouth Road Runners, 22:36) and W50 Kirsty Ward (unattached, 23:42). There were 182 finishers in less than an hour.
