Dovedale Dash Splashes Back!

Organisers are hoping the weather plays ball at this year's Dovedale Dash...

After the disappointment of last year’s cancellation, the iconic Dovedale Dash is set to return on 5 October for its 65th running. First held in 1953, the race has become one of the UK’s most beloved cross-country events, attracting between 1,200 and 1,400 participants of all abilities to the stunning surroundings of Thorpe and Dovedale in the Derbyshire Peak District.

Covering 4.75 miles, the course offers a mix of field paths, open ground and valley trails alongside the rivers Dove and Manifold, with the famous Stepping Stones crossing providing one of the event’s most memorable (and chilliest) moments. Runners can expect mud, water, hills and plenty of encouragement from the many spectators lining the route.

The race begins with a mass downhill start from Thorpe Pastures into Lin Dale, before the river crossing and a loop through Ilam and Coldwall Bridge, finishing with a challenging climb back up Lin Dale. There is also a separate children’s race, covering around 1.25 miles, which allows parents to accompany younger participants if they wish.

Organised entirely by local volunteers, the Dovedale Dash raises significant funds for community projects. Proceeds from previous races have supported charities such as Derby Mountain Rescue Team, Ilam School and Careline, as well as the upkeep of Thorpe Village Hall, which received £6,000 from the 2023 event. Even in 2024, when the race was cancelled, over £3,000 was donated to local causes thanks to the generosity of entrants.

Known for attracting both competitive club runners and fun-loving participants in fancy dress, the Dovedale Dash is celebrated for its unique mix of challenge, camaraderie and charity. As the organisers put it: “Lots of people come along year after year, so they obviously enjoy it. If you haven’t run the Dash before, why not join them and have a fun day out?”
