New Name For Glasgow Uni 5 Miler

Experience one of Scotland’s enduring road events and honour the man who helped shape the club behind that race...

The Glasgow University 5 Mile Road Race will celebrate its 62nd edition on 7 March 2026, and has been renamed the Glasgow University Des Gilmore 5 Mile Road Race in tribute to Des Gilmore, a cherished figure within the running community who passed away in July 2025.

Gilmore’s connection to Glasgow University Hares & Hounds stretches back more than five decades. He first joined the club in 1972 and went on to serve as president from 1988 until his death. He became a cornerstone of the club, volunteering countless hours, supporting training sessions and acting as official timekeeper at every edition of the 5 Mile Road Race for many years.

A spokesperson from the club said: "Des' commitment, warmth and unwavering dedication earned him deep respect across generations of students and runners and so it is only fitting that the our flagship race now bears his name."

The race itself has been a staple of the Scottish running calendar since 1963. Beginning at the Garscube Sports Complex, the traditional two-lap course follows quiet roads on the outskirts of Glasgow, combining fast flat stretches with a few testing hills. It consistently attracts club athletes, alumni and recreational runners alike.

Details of a post-race social for Hares & Hounds members, alumni and friends will be announced nearer the time, with organisers encouraging the wider running community to come together to celebrate Gilmore’s legacy.
