Run Gatwick spreads its wings

Aviation-themed event returns with new race HQ and sponsor

British Airways Run Gatwick promoted by Run Series flies back onto the fixture list this Sunday (8 May) and Race Director Dave Kelly is hoping more than 4,000 runners will assemble at the new start and finish location at Gatwick Aviation Museum

That's not the only change as a brand new Gatwick 10K has been added to the programme that also includes the original half marathon and 5K, plus the popular Family Run, and SES Water and Southern Water will be ensuring everyone will be running on tap water, rather than using bottled water.

The water companies will be providing free tap water from standpipes and SES Water’s 11,000-litre tanker, The Quenchinator, to all runners and spectators. David Kelly, Founder of Run Series, said: “For 2022 we are working hard to be a much more sustainable event.  Through our partnership with SES Water and Southern Water for the first time, we will be eliminating 24,000 plastic water bottles by providing drinking water in biodegradable paper cups to our 4,000 runners! All the water will come exactly as it does at home – from a tap!”

Run Gatwick last hit the Gatwick flight path – for its second fly past – in May 2019 when the half marathon champions were Maxwell Dumbrell (Brighton Phoenix, 1:11:05) and women's record holder Lucy Niemz (Notts AC, 1:21:40), while the men's event record holder is Neil Boniface (Crawley, 1:09:00).

The main races run under the Gatwick Airport take-off/landing approach to provide an exhilarating mid-race experience, along with a route that is set in the beautiful West Sussex and Surrey countryside on fully closed roads. Spectators can also enjoy the event day in the Event Village which offers food and drink, FREE kids’ activities, community stands, and music.

Xempo pacers, awesome medal, pre-race warm-up, chip timing, medical support, and optional tech T-shirt are among the added extras at this Run Series event, organised by the team who also deliver the multi-award-winning Run Reigate in September and Run Reigate Trail in July, committed to delivering meaningful active experiences for every participant.
