Woodland Challenge Returns To Rugby

Whether you’re chasing a new personal best, testing your endurance, or just turning up for the flapjack, the return of the Woodland Challenge is a win-win...

Big Bear Events is bringing back one of its most popular races - the Woodland Challenge, to Rugby on Tuesday, 3 June, marking its first return to the town since 2019. The event takes place along the Great Central Way, a disused railway line turned urban nature reserve, offering a shaded, tranquil backdrop rich in wildlife.

Runners will traverse the route on a simple out-and-back format, each lap covering 3.3 miles. The only real challenge comes at the end of each loop - a short but sharp ascent known locally as 'the zig zags', leading back up to event HQ.

Organisers describe the route as one of the most enjoyable they offer, noting the appeal of the shaded paths, glimpses of wildlife and the unique setting over the old Hillmorton station platform. They say: “It’s one of those courses that people keep asking us about. It’s simple, beautiful and perfect for runners of all kinds."

Participants have up to six hours to complete as many laps as they wish. With no set distance, the format is open to all abilities. Whether you’re aiming for a gentle 5K or eyeing an ultra-distance (the course record stands at an impressive 52.8 miles), runners can set their own goals and enjoy the event at their own pace. Those targeting a half marathon will need to complete four laps, while a full marathon requires eight.

For the first time, finishers will be able to choose from a selection of woodland-themed medals from previous Big Bear events, including favourites like the Fox, Badger, and Hedgehog Challenges. The initiative is both a fun twist and a sustainable way to repurpose unused medals.

Runners can expect post-run treats including flapjacks and beer, and there’s absolutely no pressure unless, of course, you fancy squeezing in 'just one more lap' before the clock runs out.
