Rugeley Returns
This challenging 10 miler is a great early season test...
Since its debut in 2016 the Rugeley 10 Miler has become a local favourite due to the course and brilliant organisation by Rugeley Runners. The event has a capacity of 350 runners which has sold out well in advance of the date in the past two years! In 2024 the race will take place on 18 February and will make for a nice first race for the season for many.
The course takes participants on a journey around the villages of Longdon and Brereton through Cannock Chase with a few inclines along the way. Climbing legs are required for this event as the rural course undulates around the outskirts of Rugeley in Staffordshire which includes Grange Hill – not the popular children’s TV programme from the 80’s, but a short, sharp ascent.
Once over this hill after 7 miles, there is the chance to rehydrate and have a few seconds breather at the second water station outside the Chetwynd Arms pub. Then dig in for the biggest hill of the race, 1.5 miles in distance and likely to be seared into every runner's memory!
Runners can ease off the brakes for the final 1.5 mile downhill stretch then it's over the finish line at Redbrook Hayes School. Organisers say of the route: "This is a challenging but very rewarding course which has had great feedback with many runners returning each year."
There's a £100 prize for the male course record and female course record prizes if anyone would like to have a go.
