New Wollaton Hall parkrun rises
It was the storm before the storm as a whopping 603 assembled for Saturday’s (8 February) inaugural Wollaton Hall parkrun. However thanks to the herculean efforts of a crack team of volunteers the huge field enjoyed a scenic route at this popular venue that has also been used as a film set.
The 16th century Wollaton Hall is set amongst 500 acres of wetland, parkland and grassland. It is also home to herds of red and fallow deer that roam around the estate and the park is much used by birdwatchers, orienteers and walkers. This Grade I listed building was used as Wayne Manor for the 2011 film Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.
Wollaton Hall is Nottinghamshire's 13th parkrun making this county a parkrun magnet. The superb location saw 600 plus – many choosing to walk or run there rather than drive – turn out to put the new event through its paces. An experienced team of hi-vis heroes kept things moving even through the finish funnel was put under pressure by the sheer weight of numbers.
They started near the main car park and entrance to follow a single lap route on tarmac, grass and trail paths. This went through the park, around the lake – possibly sighting a deer or two – and back again to finish next to the Hall.
Bruce Raeside of Kimberley & District Striders was first man home at this first event in 16:26. Lauren McNeil of Buxton AC was the first female in 17:42.
The 603 finishers were supported, encouraged and assisted by a superhero team of 29 volunteers.
