Trails, Forts And Lots Of Fun
A brand new trail adventure awaits runners in Northumberland...
A brand new adventure is coming to Northumberland this month as Trail Outlaws launches the Three Forts Hill Trail Challenge on 14 February. Set in the heart of Northumberland National Park, the 13.5 mile route links three ancient hillforts and serves up big views and a serious test of stamina.
Those taking part will pass over and through Humbleton Hill Fort, Akeld Hill Fort and the iconic Yeavering Bell, travelling through landscapes steeped in history and wide open scenery that stretches to the horizon.
The route features just under 2,500 feet of ascent and a similar amount of descent, making it a demanding day out on the hills. Organisers say: "This is a challenging but achievable event, with a generous nine hour time limit designed to allow you to complete the course safely while still having time to soak up the surroundings."
Yeavering Bell, one of the highlights of the challenge, is the largest surviving hillfort in England and dates back thousands of years, giving the event a strong connection to the area’s ancient past. The course is almost entirely off road, with organisers stressing: "Mid February conditions in the Cheviots can be unpredictable. Underfoot, competitors could encounter anything from deep mud to frozen ground or even snow, sometimes all in a single outing!"
Adding a touch of fun to the challenge, participants will need to prove they reached the third fort by selecting an item from a 'fort loot box' and taking a selfie before continuing on their way. Group selfies are welcome, making it a light hearted moment in what is otherwise a tough and rewarding journey across the hills.
