Phillip Matthews Winning Worcester City Half Marathon

Matthews double celebration at Worcester City Half Marathon

Phillip Matthews added another half marathon title to his tally and set a new course record at the Worcester City Run (Sunday 16 September). He was one of several winners at this popular event in the West Midlands.

There were record turnouts in the Half Marathon, 10K and Young Athletes Run as over 4,000 entrants took part on a dry, sunny morning in Worcester. The races were organised by Steve Cram’s company Events of the North in conjunction with Worcester City Council.

In the Half Marathon, Matthews of Swansea Harriers raced home in 1:09:40, breaking the existing course record of 1:10:24 held by last year’s winner Stuart Hawkes of Tipton Harriers. Hawkes had to settle for third place this time, finishing in 1:11:15.

Nicola Sykes of Bournville Harriers won the women’s race in 1:21:31. Les Hampton of Cheltenham RC won the wheelchair race in 1:43:14.

Over in the sold out 10K, Kadar Abdullahi was first across the line in 32:19. 17-year old Grace Brock of Cornwall AC made a winning debut, taking the women’s title in 34:24. Another Cheltenham RC athlete, Ed Grazier won the wheelchair race in 31:22.

The Young Athletes Run also sold out as youngsters were keen to emulate their athletics heroes. In the U16’s 3K race, Ciaran Lines of Sedgefield Harriers was first boy in 10:33; Evie Hawkesford-Johnson of Worcester AC was first girl in 12:22. The U11’s 1-mile race was won by Joe Maddock of Worcester AC in 6:55; Natalie Seyler of Worcester AC was the winning girl in 7:36.

A final few words from Steve Cram: “It’s been another brilliant day for the Worcester City Run.”
