Course records bonanza at Big Dipper 10K

Sunday’s (16 September) Big Dipper 10K reached the top with new course records in the men’s, women’s and children’s races as this annual race lived up to its name...

The 2018 event proved to be a high roller as course records were broken across all three races. A slick operation organised by Nigel Misselbrook, the Big Dipper 10K is as the title suggests a hilly affair on quiet country lanes around Upton Bishop in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. The weather was warm and dry - a welcome contrast to the inaugural 2006 race held in biblical conditions. There were strong headwinds to contend with but these didn’t affect Barry Reynolds and Alice Taylor’s record-breaking performances in the scenic 10K.

Reynolds of Hereford Couriers won the overall race in a new course record of 35:45. Felix Rusby of Yeovil Olympiads AC was second in 37:25 with James Rose of Severn AC third in 37:42.

A new course record was posted by the winner of the women’s race, Alice Taylor of Cheltenham Harriers who was first in 41:06. Close behind her was Isobel Davies who finished runner-up in 41:24 followed by Joanna Eddy in 46:36.

Entrants young and old turned out for this popular event that started at 11am from the Millennium Hall before heading off on an undualting route around the village. Hills were the main theme with the best saved until last – the steep Probyn’s Pitch a final challenge for tired minds and bodies.

Tea, cakes and a medal were a fitting reward for everyone’s hard work.
