Marsden Racers make it official
Running and cycling club Marsden Racers UK go official.
Marsden Racers UK affiliated with England Athletics on 7 April and this official status is the next step in their journey from early beginnings in 2014 to a pro-active, community-minded and forward-thinking club in 2020.
This West Yorkshire club caters to both runners and cyclists and have a friendly, welcoming ethos that encompasses all ages and abilities. From 5K sessions to trail and road running, road cycling to Saturday morning workouts there is something for everyone and all within the picturesque South Pennines.
Keen to support the local community their altruism included a ‘MRUK Big Clean’ where members litter-picked in and around their village. They have also donated to a food bank. Recently, ttey organised a ‘MRUK Lockdown Ultra Isolation Relay’ involving 37 members who between them completed 178.6 miles on behalf of the NHS.
The club has risen to the challenge posed by the coronavirus outbreak and whilst group training sessions are still on hold, exercising in twos is allowed. Their ‘Pair Up’ initiative matches people together as a way of enabling them to meet up in accordance with official guidelines and escape the house for a few hours! There are weekly quiz sessions with prizes, virtual yoga sessions and a virtual bootcamp.
Looking ahead they have started a new walking group (pairs only at the moment) and have taken over the reins of ‘King of the Hill’ from Team OA. This event is open to runners and mountain bikers who have the choice of racing to the top as fast as they can or taking things easy and enjoying the views. There is a choice of 5K and 10K and all proceeds go back into the club who will use these to help their community.
Marsden Racers UK update their members on a weekly basis about the situation in regard to Covid-19 which is appreciated by everyone and there is a sense of optimism about the future.
