Canal-Side Speed
This 10K race is a real midweek special...
The Kirkintilloch 10K is back for a midweek special on Thursday, 12 June, offering runners of all abilities the chance to race along one of Scotland’s most PB-friendly routes. Held primarily on the towpath of the Forth & Clyde Canal, this flat and fast course is a favourite among both seasoned club runners and those taking on their first 10K challenge.
The race kicks off from Northbank Avenue, with competitors reaching the canal towpath just 1K in before following the scenic route towards Cadder Bridge at the halfway mark. A small detour onto pavements adds a bit of variety before runners return to the towpath at Hungryside Bridge, with the final sprint finishing behind St Ninian’s High School. With only one short climb on the course, it’s the perfect event for those chasing a personal best.
For younger runners, a junior 2K race will take place earlier in the evening, with registration at Lairdsland Primary School. The junior course is flat and fully marshalled, making it an ideal introduction to racing for budding athletes.
With cash prizes for the top three male and female finishers, age group awards, and a team competition, the Kirkintilloch 10K remains one of the most competitive and rewarding club-organised events in Scotland. Last year’s edition saw Matthew Graham storm to victory in 32:16, leading Kirkintilloch Olympians to the team title, while Cat Gillen of Springburn Harriers took the women’s crown in 38:57.
One of 2024's most memorable moments was welcoming Ziyad Rahim, a runner from Doha, Qatar, who received a special medal for travelling the farthest to take part.
