Challenge In the Cheviots

Experience one of the country’s last true wilderness areas at its raw and rugged best this December...

Just a month away, the SCOTT Sports Cheviot Goat Ultra will return on 6 December, starting from Ingram Village Hall in Northumberland. Organised by Cold Brew Events, this renowned winter ultra is not for the faint-hearted with a promise to push even the most seasoned endurance runners to their limits across one of England’s wildest landscapes.

Organisers describe the event as a true test of both mental and physical resilience. They say: “90% of the challenge of the Cheviot Goat Ultra can be overcome by having a positive attitude. Let the bad weather and tough conditions get inside your head and it’s a slippery slope to DNF!”

The route takes runners on a demanding loop through the largest hills in the border region, an area so remote that most livestock are brought down from the tops at this time of year, leaving only the hardy Cheviot goats to roam. Participants will face peat-covered summits, grassy descents and the exposed ridges that straddle the border between England and Scotland.

With vast stretches of the course inaccessible to vehicles, the event team will be stationed at key checkpoints to provide support. However, this is very much a self-reliant challenge and organisers strongly advise that entrants have prior experience in ultra running and winter conditions.

Final word with organisers: "The Cheviot Goat Ultra is widely regarded as one of the most demanding ultras in the UK, offering runners not only a physical challenge but the chance to experience one of the country’s last true wilderness areas at its raw and rugged best - if you're up to it, come join us!"
