The Granite City Turns Pink
The Granite City’s Beach Esplanade turned pink on Sunday (10 June) as 2200 runners took on the challenge of running Aberdeen’s Race for Life.
Aberdeenshire dance teacher Gillian Bitta (pictured with her daughter Aspen), who was running in memory of her mum, Elizabeth MacRae, was chosen to start the event.
Gillian of Stonehaven, said: “I miss absolutely everything about my Mum. I feel so sad she’s no longer here but I’ll do anything I can to support research with the hope other families in the future don’t have to go through the heartache of losing a loved one.”
Eve Ferguson of Westhill, who was running in memory of her Auntie Sheena, and Lauren Anderson of Peterculter, running in memory of her Granny Isobel, were first to cross the line in the 10K Race For Life Aberdeen, at 48:42.
Nathan Murray, aged 13, of Aberdeen was first home in the 5K event, completing the course in just 22:06.
Race for Life brings thousands of women together to support Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research into all 200 types of cancer.
RFL spokeswoman, Victoria Steven, told runABC Scotland: “We’d like to thank our VIP starter Gillian and everyone who came along to make Race for Life Aberdeen so special.
“Sadly, most of us know someone whose life has been touched by cancer. But thanks to the huge progress that has been made in the fight against the disease, more people in Scotland are surviving cancer than ever before. Our aim is that one day everyone will beat cancer. The more research we can fund, the sooner that day will come.”
The Aberdeen RFL kicks off a summer of events across Scotland, with Dundee and Falkirk (both 17 June: 5k & 10k), Kirkcaldy and Edinburgh (both 24 June: 5k & 10k) and Perth (8 July: 5k & 10k) following hot on its heels.
Women who prefer a bit of mud with their fundraising can choose to take on one of RFL’s Pretty Muddy obstacle 5ks instead. The next ones are in Dundee (17 June), Kirkcaldy (23 June), Aberdeen (24 June) and Glasgow (9 September).
