Male, Female Or Non-Binary: All Can Run Edinburgh With Pride

This Saturday (16 June) will see the welcome and colourful return of the Edinburgh Frontrunners’ Pride Run. Last year’s inaugural event made equality history by being the first-ever UK running event to recognise three gender categories under official race licensing – effectively acknowledging non-binary as a valid gender.

Speaking about last year’s event, Edinburgh Frontrunners’ vice-president Hannah Cornish told runABC that the trailblazing changes were the result of extensive work between Scottish Athletics, members of EFR and the organisers of the Jedburgh Running Festival.

Hannah said: “We are so proud to have been involved in this, and for last year’s Pride Run to have had the privilege of being the first race to take advantage of the rule changes. All of this has increased the visibility of non-binary runners and made them feel welcome at events. We are so pleased that the change in regulations has now been accepted by UK Athletics as well.”

With just a few days to go before registration closes, Hannah says that the number of entrants to the EFR Pride Run is more than twice what it was last year – both in terms of the overall number of entrants, and the number of non-binary entrants.

The 5k race, which starts at the eastern end of The Meadows, will certainly be one of the most inclusive in the country, and not just for people along the gender spectrum. The course is also accessible to racerunners, wheelchair entrants and runners of all abilities.

Race organisers also expect a real mix of ages and nationalities to turn out on the day – and fancy dress is most certainly encouraged. Prizes in the two-lap race will be awarded to the top three female, male and non-binary runners. After the event a huge cake sale will benefit the LGBT Health and Wellbeing charity.

Inclusivity will be the name of the game on Saturday. Added Hannah: “Even if you don't fancy the run, everyone is welcome on Saturday to come along, enjoy the spectacle, eat cake, and cheer the runners home!”

Entries close on Thursday (14 June), with no entries on the day. To register, visit the Edinburgh Frontrunners' website.
