Solo And Relay Teams Take On The William Wallace Challenge

Historic ultra for solos and teams...

The William Wallace Running Festival returns to Stirling on 10 October 2026, bringing together ultra runners, relay teams and recreational participants for a day of endurance running set against some of Scotland's most historic landscapes.

At the heart of the festival is the William Wallace Ultra, a challenging 70K route that can be completed either as a solo runner or as part of a relay team. Teams of three or six runners can divide the course into manageable stages, making the event accessible to a much wider range of participants while retaining the excitement and achievement of completing an ultra distance challenge.

The relay format has become one of the event's defining features, allowing running clubs, groups of friends and family teams to experience the route together. Team members tackle individual sections before handing over to the next runner, creating a shared challenge that combines endurance, teamwork and strategy throughout the day.

For solo runners, the 70K route offers a demanding journey through central Scotland. Participants pass some of the country's most significant historical locations, including landmarks associated with William Wallace, while taking in trails, countryside, reservoirs and panoramic views around Stirling and the surrounding hills.

Alongside the ultra event, runners can also choose the 50K option, while shorter distance races help create a festival atmosphere that welcomes participants of different abilities and ambitions. Whether targeting a personal endurance challenge or enjoying a day out with teammates, the event offers a unique experience in the Scottish running calendar.

The routes combine mixed terrain running with some of Scotland's most recognisable scenery. Historic sites, woodland trails, open countryside and dramatic viewpoints create a memorable backdrop from start to finish.

What sets the William Wallace Running Festival apart is its ability to cater for both experienced ultra runners and those looking to share the challenge with others. The relay options provide an opportunity to be part of a major endurance event without covering the entire distance alone, making the festival appealing to a broad range of runners.

Combining history, teamwork, endurance and adventure, the William Wallace Running Festival continues to offer one of Scotland's most distinctive running experiences, whether crossing the finish line as a solo ultra runner or celebrating success alongside relay teammates.
