McColgan Targets Pavey's Record
20,000 head for Buckingham Palace in the Vitality London 10,000...
Two days after a brilliant third place in 1:09:42 in the Great North Run half-marathon, Eilish McColgan (Dundee Hawkhill Harriers) has confirmed her participation in the Vitality London 10,000 on Sunday, 28 September 2025. The Vitality London 10,000 is held on an iconic course in central London, starting on The Mall and passing landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral and Big Ben before finishing in front of Buckingham Palace.
McColgan (34) – the fastest British woman over 10K at 30:19 – set the female course record of 30:23 in 2022, and is aiming to equal Jo Pavey’s record of three wins at the capital’s most famous 10K, having won two of the last three editions of the Vitality London 10,000.
Pavey will also be on the Start Line this year, although she will not be among those challenging at the front of the pack. The 51-year-old is an ambassador for Running at 40 Plus and will join around 20,000 people expected to participate in the sold-out event.
McColgan, who is preparing for the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon in November, said: “I love racing the Vitality London 10,000 and have had some strong results in recent years, on what is a fast course with a great atmosphere. I am always motivated to run fast and win and to be able to equal the victories of a running icon such as Jo will act as an extra spur on the day.”
Pavey added: “Eilish is an amazing racer and ambassador for women’s running, and I wish her luck as she goes for a third win at the Vitality London 10,000 this year. I often say one of my fondest athletics memories is watching her win gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. I have had some wonderful memories on these roads and, while I won’t be challenging Eilish and the other fastest runners at the head of the field, I am very much looking forward to what is always a great day out.”
McColgan will be joined by a top-class women’s field that includes Jessica Warner-Judd, the third-fastest British woman in history over 10K, behind only McColgan and Paula Radcliffe. Warner-Judd triumphed in the elite women’s race at The Big Half on Sunday, 7 September, and is also preparing for the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon.
Great Britain track and cross-country international Zak Mahamed (Southampton AC) leads the men's elite field. Last year's men's champion was Jack Rowe (Aldershot, Farnham & District AC, 29:14). McColgan took the women's title in 31:36, and there were over 15,000 finishers.
The sold-out event celebrates the inclusiveness of running and will tell inspirational stories of those on the start line. The Celebrate You Wave, which champions body positivity, will close the Vitality London 10,000 with thousands of participants of all ages and abilities uniting over their love of being active.
