Rat Race The Wall

Historic Ultra

This event offers running with a big slice of history...

Hadrian's Wall, one of the most well known landmarks in the UK and certainly a talking point for runners both north and south of the current border! Stretching from Wallsend in Newcastle upon Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast, the Hadrian's Wall Path is an 84 mile-long National Trail.

If you fancy running alongside a piece of history then why not take on one of the UK’s most iconic ultramarathon and conquer 70 stunning miles through historic Hadrian’s Wall country at 2025's Rat Race The Wall (14 June)? From Carlisle Castle to Gateshead Baltic Quay, the route is a classic, shrouded in myth, legend and enveloped in glorious English countryside, moor, river and valley before culminating in a dramatic finale amongst the bridges of the Newcastle Gateshead quayside.

This classic route has been designed to be achieved at just 3mph and has an average completion rate of over 90%, making it the perfect first step into ultramarathon territory for those new to the world beyond 26.2.

Speaking about their event, a spokesperson from Rat Race said: "Our format comprises a continuous and fully supported journey, with expert way-marking and the now legendary Pit Stops – fuelling you up from Carlisle to Newcastle with the most unbelievable spreads you have ever seen in an Ultrarun. If you don’t come for the views, come for the snacks!"

And a previous runner had this to say: "Epic. Just beautiful route, amazing volunteers and so worth the pain. This was a dream come true to see so much of Hadrian's Wall!  I found out just how tough I really am and enjoyed every minute!"
