Stornoway Half Celebrates 40 Years

It's time to start planning your 2025 island adventure now...

Stornoway is situated on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and is renowned for it beautiful scenery and stunning beaches. So there are plenty reasons to visit, but add a Half Marathon and 10K into the mix and you have the makings of a perfect trip! The Stornoway Half Marathon will celebrate its 40th birthday in 2025, meaning there is more reason than ever to make the journey to take part.

Organisers say: "Our popular island race has been taking place annually since 1984 making 2025 the 40th edition. The route is an exciting mix of road and trail, firstly taking runners on a tour of greater Stornoway then onto the beautiful forest trails of the Lews Castle Grounds. Don’t worry the trails are very runnable and suitable for road shoes!"

The Half Marathon starts and finishes right in the heart of the town centre on the inner harbour next to the marina which is always full of cheering fans and a great atmosphere.

The event is organised by Stornoway Running & Athletics Club with all profits used to develop running and athletics on the island. A spokesperson said: "By entering the Half & 10K you are directly supporting the Club to train coaches, buy equipment, hire facilities and support the expensive travel costs of our young athletes competing all over Scotland all year round!"

Post-race you will experience island hospitality at its best with a post-race buffet and epic ceilidh in the evening to dance away the night, always great craic and a friendly warm welcome for all! Ticket sales from the post race ceilidh are donated to a nominated local charity each year.

There were 166 finishers in 2024's half marathon with Lewis MacAlpine of Stornoway Running and Athletics Club clocking 1:11:00 while first female was Muriel Macleod also of Stornoway Running & Athletics Club who ran a great time of 1:27:44.

There were 82 finishers in the 10K race with Zoe Bates of Aberdeen AAC winning the race in a spectacular 38:36. First male was Brian Scally of Stornoway Running & Athletics Club just a few seconds later in 38:42.
