Nethy's Top 10 Miler
This Highland Games 10-miler offers runners a unique experience through a beautiful ancient forest...
One of Scotland’s most scenic 10 mile races is back this summer as the RSPB Road Race returns to Nethy Bridge on 9 August, as part of the much-loved Abernethy Highland Games. The race is a favourite for both locals and visitors, offering a mix of road and trail running through one of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes.
Organisers say: "With almost the entire route passing through the ancient Abernethy Forest, a nature reserve in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, this road race offers a truly unique trail running experience."
Sponsored by the RSPB, the race begins on the village’s athletics track with three laps before heading into the forest along rough trails and forest roads. At five miles, runners rejoin the road, with a short off-road section to follow between miles seven and eight. The route then returns to Nethy Bridge, finishing on the grassy track of the Games Field via the new Speyside Way path.
The 2024 edition drew 81 runners, including one all the way from Brazil, and witnessed another exciting finish on the Games Field. The current course record of 50:56 was set by David Rodgers of Lochaber AC.
The race is held as part of the historic Abernethy Highland Games, known as the 'Friendly Games', which have taken place annually in Nethy Bridge since 1880. The combination of traditional Highland events and a high-quality running challenge makes this a day not to miss.
