Unique 10 mile race through ancient forest...
This relates to: RSPB Abernethy 10 Mile Road Race
The RSPB Abernethy Forest 10 Mile Road Race returns on Saturday 8 August 2026 as one of the standout attractions of the Abernethy Highland Games, offering runners a unique opportunity to race through the heart of one of Scotland's most important native forests.
Sponsored by the RSPB and held as part of the much-loved Highland Games, the race is unlike any other 10 miler in the country. Almost the entire route passes through the ancient Abernethy Forest within the Cairngorms National Park, combining forest tracks, quiet roads and scenic woodland with the atmosphere of one of Scotland's traditional Highland gatherings.
The race begins with three laps of the Games Field athletics track before climbing into the forest on woodland roads and trails. After rejoining the road around halfway, runners continue through a mixture of road and off-road sections before returning to Nethy Bridge via the Speyside Way, finishing back on the Games Field to the applause of Highland Games spectators.
The event combines endurance running with a true Highland Games experience. Entry to the race also allows runners to enjoy a full day of traditional competition, including heavy events, Highland dancing, pipe bands and athletics, making it one of Scotland's most distinctive sporting occasions.
With spectacular scenery, a memorable route and the unique backdrop of the Abernethy Highland Games, the RSPB Abernethy Forest 10 Mile Road Race continues to offer an unforgettable experience for runners looking to discover one of the Highlands' hidden gems.
Entries are available here via the games organisers.
