Twenty Years Of The River Ayr Way Challenge
Ultra and relay celebrate 20 years...
This relates to: River Ayr Way Challenge
One of Scotland's best known endurance events reaches a major milestone on Saturday 12 September 2026 as the River Ayr Way Ultra and Relay celebrate their 20th anniversary.
Organised by Ayrshire360, the event takes runners on a spectacular 40 mile journey through the heart of Ayrshire, following the River Ayr from Glenbuck Loch to the finish at Riverside Stadium in Ayr. Along the way, participants experience a constantly changing landscape of rural trails, woodland, riverside paths and quiet country roads before the final approach into the coastal town.
For those who prefer to share the challenge, the River Ayr Way Relay divides the course into three sections of approximately 17, 14 and 9 miles. Teams of two or three can choose how to split the distance, making the relay an excellent option for clubs, friends and colleagues looking to experience this iconic route together.
The event has earned a reputation for its outstanding runner support. Water stations are located every five miles, with fully stocked checkpoints every ten miles offering refreshments, fruit, snacks and drop bag access. Transport to the start, baggage transfer and a warm welcome from volunteers help ensure runners can focus entirely on the challenge ahead.
Although predominantly off road, the route features a variety of terrain including forest trails, riverside paths, muddy sections, quiet roads and a tarmac finish into Ayr. The constantly changing scenery provides runners with the opportunity to discover one of Scotland's lesser known but most rewarding long distance routes.
Celebrating two decades of endurance running, the River Ayr Way Ultra and Relay continue to offer a memorable adventure for solo ultra runners and relay teams alike, combining outstanding organisation, stunning scenery and a unique point to point challenge across Ayrshire.
