New Chapter For Classic Race
A classic trail event is back in 2025 with a new format...
The Sandstone Trail Half is set to replace the long-standing Sandstone Trail Races bringing a fresh yet familiar challenge to runners in Cheshire. With a single start at Bickerton Hill National Trust Car Park—previously the starting point for the 17-mile ‘A’ race—the course will now finish at Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre.
Following the Sandstone Trail, a historic 30-mile footpath stretching from the Shropshire border to the Mersey, the race takes runners along a stunning ridge of Triassic sandstone that rises dramatically from the Cheshire Plain. The route offers breathtaking views and varied terrain, making it an exciting and rewarding challenge for participants.
Runners can navigate the well-marked trail with the help of distinctive yellow Sandstone Trail markers found on posts, stiles, and gates. While marshals will be stationed at key road crossings, competitors are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the route ahead of race day.
Originally organised by Deeside Orienteering Club, the Sandstone Trail Race was a staple of the local running calendar for 40 years, held every autumn from 1977 to 2016.
Run Cheshire now organise the adapted event, ensuring the tradition lives on for future generations of trail runners. They say: "A classic route with a new twist, the Sandstone Trail Half promises a scenic, challenging, and unforgettable race experience."
