Merrick Hill

Sky's The Limit

Hill runners are in for a treat at this Galloway classic, back again in September...

Hill runners looking for a serious challenge will head to the Galloway Hills this autumn as the Merrick Hill Race returns on 13 September. Set in one of Scotland’s most rugged and scenic landscapes, the race offers 8 miles of tough off-road terrain with 2,900 feet of climb, culminating at the summit of The Merrick - the highest point in southern Scotland.

Starting and finishing at Bruce’s Stone near Loch Trool, the out-and-back route follows a demanding line across the Fell of Eschoncan, Bennan Hill and Benyellary before reaching the 2,765ft summit of The Merrick. Known for its sweeping views across the Galloway Forest and as far as Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, the route is as spectacular as it is challenging.

The Merrick sits within the Awful Hand range in the Galloway Forest Park, southwest Scotland. Despite its beauty, this is no beginner’s race. With steep ascents and rugged conditions, all competitors are expected to have experience in hill racing and to come properly equipped.

Entries are expected to draw experienced fell runners from across the region, eager to test themselves on one of Scotland’s classic highland routes. The current course records were both set in 2015. Gregor Stewart holds the men’s record with a time of 1:06:20, while Kerstin Leslie’s 1:18:46 remains the benchmark in the women’s race.
