The Merrick Hill Race is a challenging 13.6K mountain race starting and finishing near Bruce's Stone in Glentrool. The route climbs through the Galloway hills to Merrick, the highest summit in southern Scotland, with around 1,000m of ascent.
Runners face a steep opening climb over the Fell of Eschoncan before continuing across rough hill terrain towards Benyellary. From there the route crosses the Neive of the Spit and makes the final ascent to the summit of Merrick at 843m before retracing the route back towards Glentrool.
Mountain conditions and exposed sections make navigation and appropriate equipment an important part of the challenge. Competitors are required to carry mandatory hill running safety kit, while the substantial climbing and technical terrain provide a demanding test for experienced hill runners.
