10 Miles & Plenty Of Smiles
With the race’s reputation for spectacular views, organisers are encouraging runners to enter early to avoid missing out on one of Scotland’s most scenic ten mile challenges...
One of Scotland’s most scenic road races will return to Argyll’s Secret Coast on 12 September with runners being urged to book their spot for this year's Kyles 10 Miles. The popular event takes place around the spectacular coastline of the Ardlamont Peninsula and starts near Tighnabruaich on the picturesque shores of the Kyles of Bute.
Widely regarded by regular competitors as one of the most beautiful races in the country, the ten mile circular route showcases the dramatic landscapes of Argyll’s Secret Coast. Runners and walkers pass rolling hills, woodland and quiet coastal roads while enjoying views across the water towards Isle of Arran, Kintyre and Isle of Bute.
The route heads out from Tighnabruaich around the Ardlamont Peninsula, with the opening five miles providing a testing and hilly start before the course flattens out for the return section. The second half follows the coastal road towards Kames, offering long stretches beside the shoreline before the finish. Organisers say: "The combination of challenging climbs, flowing descents and flatter coastal miles creates a race that rewards both endurance and pacing."
The race will finish nearby at Kames Hotel where runners can enjoy refreshments and a barbecue after crossing the line. All entrants will receive a commemorative medal and technical t-shirt, while trophies and prize money will be awarded to the race winners.
The event has become known for its warm atmosphere as well as its scenery, with visitors often making a weekend of the trip to explore the Cowal Peninsula. Bordered by Loch Fyne and the Kyles of Bute, the area offers rugged coastlines, sandy beaches and forested hills, while remaining within around two hours’ drive of Glasgow.
