Runner in a coached training session in Staffordshire

John Danahay invites runners to keep pace with this challenge

This latest challenge from HPR coach John Danahay is all about even pacing over three continuous miles.

The beginning of June sees the launch of an open challenge from coach John Danahay of High Performance Runner (HPR) that requires pacing skills. Even splits are the order of the day over 3 miles and it can be done any time and any place but not on a treadmill!

The challenge is open to runners of all abilities who have an equal chance of reaching the top of the leader board as this is about keeping an even pace rather than being the fastest or the best hill climber.

Runners have the choice of terrain and speed to suit them. These three miles can be done as a session in itself or as part of a longer run and the first mile acts as a pace setter for the other two. The aim is for runners to keep to the same speed over three continuous miles in a row then upload their data to Strava and tag John or send him a link. A screenshot of their GPS watch data is equally acceptable.

The runner with the near perfect pacing will be number one on the leader board. This is not as easy as it sounds as John states: “Even pacing is a skill always worth practicing so this is a good training session as well as a challenge.”

There have already been some strong performances and a tie-breaker may be needed for mile 4.

John Danahay is also hosting a second open challenge in June – running 3000m at a flat-out pace to determine VO2 Max and fitness levels.
