The Great North Run Returns This September

World's biggest half marathon returns...

This relates to: AJ Bell Great North Run

The countdown is on to the AJ Bell Great North Run as the world's biggest half marathon returns on Sunday 13 September, bringing around 60,000 runners to the streets of Newcastle, Gateshead and South Shields for one of the most iconic events in the global running calendar.

Since its inaugural race in 1981, the Great North Run has become much more than a half marathon. Every year, elite athletes, club runners, charity fundraisers and first-time participants share the same famous 13.1-mile journey, creating an atmosphere unlike any other running event. The race continues to raise millions of pounds for charities while attracting competitors from across the UK and around the world.

The point-to-point course begins in Newcastle before taking runners over the iconic Tyne Bridge and through Gateshead. From there, the route heads towards South Tyneside before finishing on the seafront at South Shields, where thousands of spectators create one of the most memorable finishes in distance running. The combination of city streets, famous landmarks and coastal scenery has helped make the route one of the sport's most recognisable.

While the Great North Run welcomes many runners chasing personal bests, the event has always been defined by its inclusivity. The field includes everyone from elite athletes and experienced club runners to those completing their very first half marathon or running in support of a charity close to their heart. The wave start system, extensive on-course entertainment and outstanding crowd support ensure every participant enjoys the same unforgettable experience.

Preparation will be entering its final phase for many runners as race day approaches. Long runs are beginning to reduce, while attention turns towards pacing, nutrition, travel planning and making the most of the unique atmosphere that awaits on Tyneside. With tens of thousands of runners expected and huge spectator crowds lining the route, organisers encourage participants to plan their event day well in advance.

Whether chasing a fast time, raising money for charity or simply aiming to cross one of the most famous finish lines in running, the Great North Run continues to offer an experience that few races anywhere in the world can match. For many, it is the highlight of the running year, and another unforgettable chapter looks set to be written this September.
