The Great North Run is the world's biggest Half Marathon and one of the UK's most iconic road races. Since its inaugural event in 1981, it has welcomed hundreds of thousands of runners to the famous 13.1 mile route from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields, combining elite competition with an unrivalled mass participation atmosphere.

The point to point course starts in the centre of Newcastle before crossing the Tyne Bridge and heading through Gateshead towards the North Sea coast. Runners tackle the gradual climb to the highest point of the course before descending towards the spectacular finish in South Shields, where crowds line the route to create one of the most memorable race day experiences in world running.

Alongside the elite races featuring many of the world's finest athletes, the Great North Run is renowned for its fundraising achievements and inclusive spirit, welcoming participants of every ability. With its unique blend of sporting history, community support and unforgettable atmosphere, it remains one of the most celebrated road running events anywhere in the world.
