Show your colours this Friday night

This weekend’s Pride celebrations in the capital will get off to a running start tomorrow (Friday, 21 June), with the return of the Edinburgh Frontrunners’ Pride Run.

Marking a change from previous editions of the race, this year the friendly and inclusive 5k run will be held in The Meadows on the evening before the Pride March and other festivities. The event will also have chip-timing for the first time this year.

Race organiser and EFR President Al Hopkins told runABC Scotland online: “We used to do the run on the Saturday morning, before the Pride March, but by the time we packed up and were ready to head out, we were all knackered!”

This year, everyone taking part in the Pride Run – and everyone who hasn't too – will also have the option to celebrate afterwards at a post-run ceilidh – featuring gender-neutral calling – at St Peter’s Hall.

The £7 cost of a ticket to the ceilidh – open to runners and non runners alike – includes a vegan buffet, and revellers can bring their own drinks.

They added: “Our club, our events and our post-race ceilidh are open and welcoming to all. Our Meadows route is suitable for all abilities and is very accessible: three wheelchair entrants took part last year. We expect a very good turnout on Friday and have our fingers crossed for good weather!”

All profits from Friday night’s Edinburgh Pride run and the post-race bake sale will be donated to the Rock Trust, a charity that works with young people between the age of 16 and 25 who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless.

Thanks to the efforts of individuals from EFR and the Jedburgh Three Peaks Ultra, the 2017 Edinburgh Pride Run was the first scottishathletics licenced event to offer a non-binary entry category.

Runners hoping to take part in the event are encouraged to sign up online before tonight's deadline (Thursday 20 June). Very few places remain; only limited entries will be available on the day and will cost £15 instead of £10, with the extra £5 going directly to charity.

Hopkins added: “The Pride Run celebrates diversity in all its forms and will add lots of colour to the Meadows on Friday night! We hope you’ll join us!”
