From Tower To Castle

An ultra run with a twist - that's what Fylde Coast Runners are offering this September...

Following a successful inaugural staging, Fylde Coast Runner's Tower to Castle Ultra will return in 2024 with a race date of 28 September the one to note. This is a unique event, with runners taking in a stunning course from Blackpool Tower to Lancaster Castle following the coastal way. But there is a twist, to cross the estuary, organisers have teamed up with the Fleetwood Ferry Company for the short hop across the water from Fleetwood to Knott End.

Runners will start their adventure from the world-famous Comedy Carpet in the shadow of Blackpool Tower and will have a maximum of eight hours to reach the finish line at Lancaster Castle. Organisers say: "This is no mean feat, but it is achievable with guts and determination. The 30 mile course is well marked and features four checkpoints along the way. The run is suitable for beginners wanting to try an ultra and for seasoned ultra-runners looking for a PB over the distance."

The route includes 9.3 miles of promenade; 0.2 mile sea crossing; 6 miles of quiet country roads and 15 miles of coastal paths and disused railway. The course follows signage on the promenade, coastal paths and road sections with the country trail part being way-marked. There are three check points, each will have water, and a selection of supplementary snacks. A drink will be available for all athletes at the finish.

Speaking about this year's upcoming event, organisers said: "This year we have members from 27 different clubs as well as many unattached runners. With nine weeks to go, we are up to just short of 200 runners, so if you want to do an ultra that has a ferry crossing in it, then get booked in now, as we have only ordered 300 blingtastic medals!"

Last year's male winner was Karl Hodgson in a remarkable time of 3:49 and first female was Sadie Besley in 4:48. The male team was dominated by Blackpool Wyre & Fylde and the female team was won by Scotland's Giffnock AC.
