Solstice Saunter

Sauntering Into Summer

Fancy running 5 miles for Sue Ryder on the longest day, in the loveliest of places?

The Solstice Saunter is a 5 mile run on the trails of the breath-taking Bolton Abbey Estate, organised by the Airedale Dodgers as a fundraising event for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. The event will take place on the longest day of 2024 which is Thursday 20 June.

The Solstice Saunter is a circular route of five miles that starts from the Cavendish Pavilion car park and runs a clockwise loop up through the Strid Wood to Barden Bridge, then back along the road to the finish line at Cavendish Pavilion. The route goes along tarmac and gravel paths with a short section on grass.

Every participant is chip timed but whether you run, jog or saunter, everyone will receive a well deserved bespoke Solstice Saunter medal. Those who sign up to the Bolton Abbey event will be sent a free car parking pass to use on entry. They will be welcome to arrive any time that day before the event and enjoy the estate before their Saunter.

Close to 700 runners took part in the 2023 edition, so this is a well-attended event. The winner of the 5 mile race was Michael Vargas of Hyde Park Harriers who broke the tape in 30:46 while the first female was Kirsty Wicks in 35:07.

If you can't make it to Bolton Abbey on the day there is also the option to do your own Virtual Solstice Saunter, running a five mile route of your choice on the longest day. Doing this will also earn you a Solstice Saunter medal which will be sent out in advance to wear with pride after the virtual race has been completed.
