Edinburgh Marathon Festival Returns
Scotland’s biggest marathon weekend returns to Edinburgh and East Lothian...
The Edinburgh Marathon Festival is one of Scotland’s most significant mass-participation sporting events and among the fastest growing marathon weekends in the United Kingdom. First held in 2003, it has grown into a multi-day international running festival attracting tens of thousands of participants each year.
Created to fill a gap in Scotland’s race calendar, the festival aimed to establish a major marathon capable of attracting both elite athletes and recreational runners. Organisers designed a distinctive point-to-point course starting in Edinburgh and heading east through East Lothian before finishing in Musselburgh. Its flat, gently descending profile quickly earned the Edinburgh Marathon a reputation as one of the UK’s fastest courses and a popular choice for personal bests and qualifying performances.
Initially centred on the Marathon and Edinburgh Half Marathon, the event expanded into a full festival weekend with additional races including 10K, 5K, relay and junior events. This broader programme helped make the festival accessible to runners of all abilities and strengthened its position within Scotland’s sporting calendar.
Participation has grown steadily since its launch, with runners travelling from more than 40 countries. The combination of a fast course, scenic coastal routes and Edinburgh’s international reputation has helped establish the festival as a global running destination.
Charity fundraising has become a defining feature with millions of pounds raised annually. The event also delivers significant economic benefits to Edinburgh and East Lothian through tourism and local engagement.
Today, the Edinburgh Marathon Festival remains a cornerstone of UK endurance running, celebrated for its inclusivity, performance potential and lasting impact on Scotland’s running culture.
Long live Edinburgh Marathon!
