Colchester Zoo Stampede 10K medal

James Sullivan has a spring in his stride at Colchester Zoo Stampede 10K

Nearly 1,500 runners got their paws on this handsome bling, having been in touch with their inner animal in the Colchester Zoo Stampede 10K on Sunday (19 May).

Nicola Everett (Harwich, 54:42) was one athlete who dug deep in perfect racing conditions before posting this reaction on Facebook: “Wow that was a hard course of hills but I managed a PB, yippee”!

Nicola finished 344th and was among half the field who finished inside the hour, despite the undulations and the distraction of coming close to some of the 260 species from around the world in the 60 acres of parkland and lakes at Colchester Zoo.

Impressive two-legged speed was shown by the leading men as James Sullivan (Springfield Striders, 34:27) shook off the attentions of Michael Wilkes (Southend Flyers, 36:37 PB) and Geraint White (Ipswich Jaffa, 36:44 PB) for top honours.

The first dozen were through the finish line within 40 minutes and at 41:42 the women's winner arrived – Jemma Clarry (St Edmund Pacers), who was more than two minutes clear of Katie Simmonds (Haslemere Border AC, 44:11 PB) and Charlie Alexander (Tiptree, 45:15).

All finishers were rewarded with the Colchester Zoo Stampede 10K themed medal and event T-shirt, a goody bag and free admission to the zoo for their £30 entry fee – good value as a zoo ticket alone is worth up to £23.99.

If you missed out this time there is an opportunity to go twice as far plus a bit in the Colchester Stampede Half Marathon on Sunday 6 October. Full details of this event are available at the race website here
