Family Running On The Coast

If you'd looking for something to do with the kids this weekend, then we may have just the answer...

Although the North East’s newest family running festival takes place this weekend (17 August), there are still places available for anyone keen to get involved and with the summer holidays now in full swing, families looking for new ways to keep the kids entertained might find Tidal Trails is just the ticket. Taking over the beach and famous Leas in South Shields the event promises a full day of activity, music and food in a spectacular coastal setting.

Tidal Trails has been designed as a summer festival for active families, with something on offer for all ages and abilities. Runners can take part in 2K and 8K trail races, test themselves in the lively ‘Super Sand Sprints’ or join Paula Radcliffe’s Families on Track initiative, which encourages families to run together in a safe and fun environment. Away from the running, there will be beach games, entertainment from the Tidal Trails Stage and a variety of food and drink stalls to enjoy.

The event is also making a big push to be inclusive and accessible. Organisers have worked with community groups to open the event to people who might not otherwise be able to take part. Through a partnership with St Oswald’s Hospice, one family coping with bereavement will have the opportunity to enjoy a day out together, making new memories after a particularly difficult time.

Beth Gregan, children’s lead of bereavement at St Oswald’s Hospice, said: “This is an incredible opportunity for one of our families with young children to explore a day of fun. The children have been dealing with the death of their dad and an event like this gives them something to look forward to and recognise how far they have come. It’s an incredible experience to see a family who have been through such a difficult time, finding joy together and celebrating their strength as a family.”

With a variety of ticket options still available, organisers are encouraging people to book quickly to secure their spot. If you'd like to know more, visit the Tidal Trails website.
