Wind Farm Night Race Makes It Back!
This night time trail race is a popular one, if you fancy it you'll need to be quick...
Hard to believe now, but there are still some races that are yet to make a post-covid reappearance. One of them, Run the Blades – the Night One is looking to put that right later this year when runners will take to the trails of Whitelee Wind Farm donning their head torches and waving their glow sticks.
This is a sister race to July's Run The Blades which has grown to become one of the largest trail running events in the UK and is a unique event held exclusively within the UK’s largest onshore wind farm, just a 20 minute drive from the centre of Glasgow. The only difference is the date - 20 October, and the fact that this one is run at night time.
Organisers say: "Think you know Run the Blades? Try again. At just over a 10K (10.4K to be exact) don’t expect this to be easy as you run the trails with the turbine blades sweeping out of sight above your head. But grab your head torch and a sense of adventure and join us this October."
2023 will see the event staged for its third time and once again runners will take to the trails in the dark with the route lit only by glow sticks and the strength of their own head torches. The trail in the main follows existing windfarm access roads which offer a good surface to transition from road running to trail running. Although this isn’t a technical trail, organisers do recommend trail shoes as some sections of the trail can be muddy, and a little rough.
It's a popular race, when it was announced that it was back for 2023 people took to social media, commenting: "Woo hoo it's back loved this race last time." And "It's a great wee run, and strange with all the headlamps."
At the time of writing, organisers say that half the places available sold out in the first 72 hours they were available. So if you want to be a part of this darkly delicious run, you'll need to be quick. By signing up you will benefit from chip timing, quality medal, goody bag, on-site parking, friendly and experienced staff and volunteers. All in all, a great 'night' out.
If you're not up for running this year, volunteer and you will bag yourself free entry to a Run The Blades 2024 event.
