Rising Sun parkrun to turn orange in support of domestic abuse awareness...

Runners in North Tyneside are being encouraged to join a special edition of the Rising Sun parkrun as the community comes together to show support for those affected by domestic abuse. The event, organised by North Tyneside Council with the help of local running group These Girls Can Run, will take place on 6 December in Rising Sun Country Park, Benton.

This marks the fourth year of the takeover, which has become a regular fixture in the local events calendar. Participants of all ages and fitness levels are invited to take part and are encouraged to wear orange as a visible show of solidarity. Toiletry donations for local refuges are also welcomed to provide direct support to people experiencing domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse remains a widespread issue, affecting one in four women and one in six men. The parkrun forms part of the global 16 Days of Action campaign. Representatives from Findaway, a service offering advice to family and friends concerned about domestic abuse, will attend the event to share information about support available in the area.

Councillor Sandra Graham, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said she was proud to see the community standing together. She stressed: "Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, events like this help to send a message of support and awareness."

These Girls Can Run will again play a central role in supporting the event. Strategic Lead Jaime Maccoy said the group hopes the day will encourage anyone experiencing abuse to seek help and highlighted the importance of offering understanding and solidarity within the community.
