HogmanHoway 5K To Light Up Newcastle
This new event promises a spectacular send-off to 2025 and an energetic start to the year ahead...
Newcastle will welcome a brand new running celebration this winter as the inaugural HogmanHoway 5K takes place on Wednesday 31 December. The night-time event will start and finish at the Civic Centre and promises an atmospheric run through the heart of the city.
Organised by Events of the North, the HogmanHoway 5K invites runners of all abilities to ring in the New Year in style. The closed-road route is flat and fast, weaving through Newcastle’s iconic streets and twinkling festive lights to create a memorable setting for both first-timers and seasoned club athletes.
The celebrations begin early in the day, with runners encouraged to enjoy the Quayside fireworks at 6pm before heading to the Civic Centre to prepare for the race. The event hub will offer baggage storage, toilets, refreshments and a lively party atmosphere to carry participants towards the start line. Race finishers will receive a bespoke event medal, a limited-edition buff and a festive New Year goody bag.
There will also be an elite race at the front of the field, with ten to 12 athletes contesting both the men’s and women’s races for a share of the £14,000 prize fund. The elite athletes will be racing on a World Athletics ratified course with opportunities for time bonuses and one of the final elite performances of 2025. Runners interested in joining the elite field can request consideration by contacting the organisers directly.
