Runners At The Matthew Walker Christmas Pudding 10K

Record numbers run for pud at Matthew Walker 10K

Two Santas on bikes led out runners on a sunny morning at the Matthew Walker 10K Christmas Pudding Run (Sunday 18 November). It was time to put the new course to the test...

Now in its 32nd year, the Matthew Walker 10K Christmas Pudding Run is a classic road race, organised by Heanor RC. All 1,200 places sold out several weeks beforehand – a testament to the enduring popularity of this challenging 10K. And to the post-race mulled wine and mince pies! There was the option to top up the fuel levels before and afterwards with breakfast at The Wolf Hut.

This year saw a new course although the start/finish was at Shipley Park Visitor Centre as usual. The route in the 1.5 mile Fun Run remained unchanged.

The race got underway at 10am, ably assisted by Santa Claus 1 and 2 as the runners headed off on an undulating route around Heanor, Derbyshire. There was musical accompaniment from a steel band and verbal encouragement from marshals that spurred everyone up the final switchback hill.

Chris Rainsford of the host club was the winner in 31:52. Richard Weir of Derby AC was second in 32:42 with Samuel Moakes of Sutton in Ashfield Harriers & AC third in 33.01.

Juliet Potter of Charnwood AC was the fastest female in 36:59 and finished 7th overall. Charlie Nurse of Wigston Phoenix RC came second in 39:35 followed by Samantha Crowe of Heanor RC in 40:35.

There were hampers and prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female and age category winners and every finisher received a Matthew Walker Christmas pudding and technical T-shirt.

All proceeds donated to the Boparan Charitable Trust.
