New Pennine Trail Marathon on top of the world
The inaugural event made a winning debut.
It was beauty in the east at the new Pennine Trail Marathon (Saturday 27 August) where runners experienced a first rate event in a stunning location. They were hot on the trail, and tracks in the East Lancashire countryside at this inov-8 sponsored race that supports local causes and sustainability.
Organised by Pennine Trails, this race is the latest addition to their line up and received rave reviews by those taking part. Sweltering conditions and hills were a challenging combination; however, excellent marshalling and a well marked/signed route kept the runners moving whilst having time to enjoy the views. The four checkpoints did a sterling job and the generous cut off times made it suitable for many.
The race started at 10am (next year it will begin at an earlier time to avoid the worst of the heat). Off they went from Simply Fields near Hurstwood on a picturesque course that included Gorple Rocks, Widdop Reservoir, Top Withins, Bronte Waterfalls and Hardcastle Crags. There were climbs and descents to test fitness levels and leg strength and high temperatures that made it even harder but didn't spoil the adventure. They finished back at Simply Fields.
Tim Brook of Holmfirth Harriers was first across the line, winning the inaugural Pennine Trail Marathon 2022 in 3:44:12. Karl Hodgson of Red Rose Road Runners finished second in 3:57:40 and Jonathan Moon of Sowerby Bridge Snails RC third in 4:03:20.
Louise Goddard of Bowland Fell Runners was the winning lady in 4:47:48. Sophie Pilkington of Red Rose Road Runners was second lady in 4:48:54 with Kim Kennedy of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers third lady in 4:49:31.
