Race The Train 2026

Can You Beat The Steam Train To Rawtenstall?

A unique race against a train...

Race The Train returns on 12 July 2026 with one of the most unusual and entertaining challenges in the North West running calendar. The popular event invites runners to take on an approximately 11 mile point to point trail race from Bury to Rawtenstall while attempting to beat a steam train travelling alongside them on the historic East Lancashire Railway.

The race starts at Bolton Street Station in Bury to the sound of a steam whistle before runners head north along trails beside the railway and the River Irwell. The route follows a mix of riverside paths and countryside trails, creating a scenic journey through the Irwell Valley with the ever present challenge of keeping pace with the train.

What makes the event so memorable is the interaction with the railway itself. The steam train moves ahead of the runners, stops to change tracks and then heads north again, creating several opportunities for competitors to see how they are faring in their battle against the locomotive. Friends and family can even ride the train and cheer runners on from different points along the route, adding a unique spectator element rarely found in running events.

Although the race is built around a fun concept, the route still provides a proper trail running challenge. The point to point format, varied terrain and steady progression towards Rawtenstall create a race that appeals to both experienced trail runners and those looking for something different from a traditional road event.

Organised by Trail Blazing Events, Race The Train has built a loyal following and regularly attracts returning runners who enjoy its combination of heritage railway nostalgia, trail running and community atmosphere. Every finisher receives a commemorative medal and race T shirt, while prizes are awarded across open, veteran and team categories.

For many runners, the attraction is simple. Few races offer the chance to line up against a steam train, race through Lancashire countryside and share the experience with supporters travelling alongside the route. It is a challenge that combines competition, history and fun in equal measure.

Entries are open via Eventrac now ahead of the July return, with organisers expecting another strong turnout for one of the North West’s most distinctive summer races.
