Shauney Watson in running action

No Mountain High Enough For Shauney

A young British runner has completed the world’s highest marathon on Mount Everest – despite suffering from a severe stomach bug. Shauney Watson ran the 26.2miles at 17,000ft for the Horseback charity, who help both serving military personnel and veterans who have suffered acute stress as a result of active service.

It was the end result of two years of hard work for Shauney, but she admits she feared she would have to pull out of the race after falling ill just one night before.

However she dragged herself to the start line and managed to complete the course – clocking a time of 9:25:32.

Explaining her heroics to the Daily Record she said: “I had spent two years aiming for it and it felt like it was going to slip from my grasp.

“I decided that if by the morning I could stand up, then I would do the race, regardless of how I was feeling. The morning came and I couldn’t eat anything because I couldn’t stomach it but I got salts into me and went out.

“It was -17C when we started and I just didn’t have any energy to give. I just dragged myself through it.”

At 22 years old, Shauney believes she is the youngest person to have completed the marathon. So far the Forfar resident has raised more than £2000.
