You'd Be Mad To Miss This One!
This Shropshire favourite looks set to attract another strong field this autumn...
Shropshire's Mad Jack’s 5 will be back on 8 November, bringing runners to the stunning grounds of the National Trust’s Attingham Park for a five-mile off-road challenge with a unique twist.
Now in its 17th year, the race is organised jointly by Shrewsbury AC and the National Trust. The course winds its way through pastureland where cattle, sheep and deer roam, before heading into woodland sections where fallen trees and other natural obstacles keep competitors on their toes. Depending on the weather in the days leading up to the event, marshy sections can also add to the fun.
The highlight for many, however, is the infamous 'pond' - just before the finish, runners must wade or splash through half a metre of cold, muddy water in what has become the signature feature of the race. It is a test of grit and good humour that never fails to raise smiles from runners and spectators alike.
Attingham Park provides the perfect backdrop, with plenty of space for families to picnic, a play area for children and refreshments available in the Courtyard Café before, during and after the event.
Last year’s race saw close to 400 runners take part, with Joe Leahy of Shrewsbury AC storming to victory in 28:27 and Hayley Wells of Telford Harriers the first woman home in 33:33. For 2025, finishers can look forward to bespoke eco medals specially designed by students from Telford College.
