Longside Loop 10 Mile Race

Magical 10 Miler

The 2026 Longside Loop is shaping up to be a spellbinding addition to Scotland’s spring racing calendar...

Witches, wizards and muggles alike are being summoned to Aberdeenshire this spring as the Longside Loop 10 Mile Race returns on Saturday 2 May, coinciding with International Harry Potter Day.

Organised by Peterhead Athletics Club, the early summer fixture has become a popular test for north east runners since its launch in 2016. Originally staged between Hatton and Peterhead, the race adopted its current looped format in 2018, starting and finishing in the village of Longside.

This year’s edition promises a magical twist, with organisers encouraging participants to embrace the Harry Potter theme as they tackle the scenic 10 mile route through the Buchan countryside. Costumes are welcome as runners head south from Longside along quiet country roads towards Peterhead, passing race sponsor Rora Dairy before continuing through Inverugie and onto the Formartine and Buchan railway line for the return stretch back to the village finish.

The course combines rolling rural views with a fast run in along the old railway line, where finishers will receive a bespoke medal inspired by the event’s wizarding theme along with post race refreshments. A junior mile will also take place, featuring separate under 16 and under 12 races, giving young runners their own chance to shine.

Competition at the front of the field is expected to be fierce. The current Longside Loop course records stand at 54:36 set by Ian Allen in 2024 and 64:05 set by Louise Cartmell in 2024.
