Windermere Marathon Saved!

Great Run adds delivery of UK’s most scenic road marathon, Windermere Marathon, to its road running portfolio...

The Great Run Company's Great Run series will include the beautiful Windermere Marathon in 2025. First staged in 1982, we reported earlier this year that the event would not return next year, so the news that a marathon will take place on 15 June, 2025 is likely to delight many runners around the country.

The Windermere Marathon is one of the most scenic road marathons in the UK, showcasing the natural beauty of the lakes and the stunning Windermere Marathon route takes in one anticlockwise circuit of Lake Windermere, passing Hawkshead, Newby Bridge and Bowness-on-Windermere. The course will broadly remain the same with new start and finish locations providing participants an opportunity to experience all the Lake District has to offer.

Colin Murphy, Great Run Race Director for Windermere Marathon, said: “The Great Run Company is delighted to have inherited the Windermere Marathon from Brathay Trust. We are lucky to have the opportunity to keep such a historic event going, and to continue to raise important funds and fitness in the local community.”

Paul Foster, Chief Executive, The Great Run Company, said: “We are already working hard to deliver a landmark event, during a weekend where Great Run operates in the Lake District, as part of our much-loved Great North Swim event.

“This will allow us to continue to work closely with the local community and those who have taken part in Windermere Marathon before and attract new participants to this beautiful event. It’s important for us to also be able to help Brathay Trust continue their incredible fundraising, and I’m pleased they are the lead charity partner for the Windermere Marathon 2025.”
