The streets of Manchester were bouncing with the footsteps of runners, supporters and spectators on Sunday (21 May), as the city came out in force to celebrate 20 years of the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run.

Sir Mo Farah, who was running his last race in Manchester, ahead of his planned retirement in September, was given a hero’s welcome as he crossed the finish line on Deansgate. Mo finished in 8th place in the 10K, against a competitive men’s elite field that saw Italy’s Eyob Faniel take the top spot in 28:27. Brit Mark Scott was second in 28:31 with Australia’s Stewart McSweyn third in 28:35.

In the women’s 10K race Kenyan Hellen Obiri was first over the line for the second consecutive year in a time of 31:14, her compatriot Peres Jepchirchir finished second in 31:59 and British runner Calli Thackery third in 32:51.

Reflecting on his upcoming retirement Sir Mo commented: "The atmosphere today was amazing and the support all throughout the course was incredible.

“This is what I will miss, people coming together, running for loved ones. Manchester is incredible there are so many people taking part and giving you that support."

Michael Jensen claimed victory in the Half Marathon distance with a time of 01:06:20, while first female home was Caroline Brenchley in 1:18:44.

Thousands of amateur runners also took on their own half marathon and 10K challenges, including some well-known faces. Stars of Coronation Street including Peter Ash running for MND, Channique Sterling-Brown running for a local Manchester Community Centre and Samia Longchambon who ran for East Cheshire Hospice along with her Dancing on Ice professional husband, Sylvain.

Also on the start line, was Manchester legend Peter Hook running for The Christie and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham running for Coffee4Craig.

Chief Executive of the Great Run Company, Paul Foster said: “It’s been an incredible day at the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run. With thousands turning out to run, raise, volunteer and support. We’d like to thank our partners, Manchester City Council, and the people of the city who have as always made it a day to remember.”

The 2024 AJ Bell Great Manchester Run will take place on Sunday 26 May and there is a launch price discount on entry for both distances for two weeks only.
