Play tag (virtually) with the world on Global Running Day
Fifth anniversary of Global Running Day brings runners together with a global game of tag
Organisers of today’s Global Running Day (Wednesday, 3 June) have taken their annual ‘worldwide celebration of running’ online.
Since its inception in 2016 – when more than 2.5 million people from 177 countries pledged to run more than 9.2 million miles – GRD has reminded runners the world over of the positive impact running can have on our lives, as well as the power of the sport to bring people together.
Despite the current restrictions on exercise, travel and social contact in force the world over, GRD’s mission hasn’t changed. In fact, it’s more important than ever, as runners and non-runners alike take to the roads, trails and treadmills as a way to reduce stress, achieve goals, get a change of scene and maintain fitness.
Reflecting both the 'social distancing' realities we all currently face as well as the importance of being grateful for what others contribute to our lives, GRD 2020’s ‘Run 1 Tag 1’ social media challenge calls on runners around the world to mark Global Running Day by running 1 mile – or completing an at-home exercise – for someone who has inspired them.
When they’re done their choice of challenge, participants should tag a friend with #Run1Tag1 and ask them do the same. Designed to ‘digitally unite people across the world in a global effort to encourage physical wellness and strengthen community’, GRD organisers hope that #Run1Tag1 will play out just like a globetrotting game of tag.
Runners who don’t want to take part in the #Run1Tag1 social media challenge can still celebrate GRD the traditional way today: by pledging to run a certain number of miles alone, or as part of a team.
